Why Do Men Snore More?
Throughout this investigation into the causes of snoring one constant is that snoring occurs far more commonly in men than in women. Although these numbers vary according to the research, snoring is approximately ten times more common among men. But why?
We suspect that men have a greater tendency to build up bulky throat tissues which then become filled with fat getting softer and more relaxed as they age, and therefore, set the stage of snoring. As male gain weight, they do so by depositing fat around their abdomens, necks, and shoulders. These men characteristic are largely due to the action of a male hormone (androgen) which stimulates appetite, weight gain and salt retention. All of which can aggravate snoring.
Physicians recognize the profile of a typical snorer as a large, heavily built man in his forties or fifties who has gained weight and neglected regular exercise. There are, of course, many exceptions to this stereotypical portrait. In medical practice, for example, we frequently see fit and trim young patient whose habitual honking has caused them to be thrown out of campgrounds!
Female pattern of fat distribution, sad but true, inevitably produce weight gain around the hips and things thus avoiding fat loading of the neck and protecting the integrity of the upper airway. In addition, a female hormone (estrogen) is thought to protect against the development of severe snoring in women by stimulating respiration. This is born out by the fact that the incidence of women snorers definitely increase after menopause.
Despite the gender characteristics that obviously produce more male than female snorers, women are certainly not immune. In the past, women may have appeared some what reluctant to acknowledge a snoring habit because it’s regarded as an unfeminine trait. Now, however, they readily seek advice and treatment when their snoring appears to threaten to threaten a relationship.
In summary, any factor constricting your upper respiratory airway, bringing the collapsible tissue into greater contact with the air flow or adding to the slack of these tissues can cause snoring because snoring is the sound produced when tissues vibrate uncontrollably and rapidly as we breathe.
